U.S. Citizenship Application

Immigration Naturalization and Citizenship - San Francisco, CA
If you are a lawful permanent resident and want to become a U.S. citizen, the Law Offices of Jorge Rodriguez-Choi can advise and help you through the naturalization process.

What should I do to apply?

To apply for citizenship in San Francisco you must fill out a citizenship application called a Form N-400.  You are required to submit photos, fingerprints, and other required documents, along with naturalization application fees.  Questions on the form determine your eligibility and need to be answered correctly and truthfully.  The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) offers an eligibility worksheet to assist with filling out the form.

Our San Francisco immigration attorney at the Law Offices of Jorge Rodriguez-Choi can explain the questions so you fully understand what is being asked. We can also evaluate whether you meet eligibility requirements.

Once the USCIS receives the Form N-400 and required documentation, it schedules your citizenship test in San Francisco where a USCIS official interviews you to test your basic English skills and U.S. civics knowledge of history and government.  If you pass the test, the last step is taking the Oath of Allegiance, and afterward you are a U.S. citizen.

If I have a family member that is already a citizen, can that help?

If your parents were U.S. citizens at the time when you were adopted or born outside the United States, under the Child Citizenship Act (CCA) you may be automatically a citizen when you immigrate to the United States with a U.S. citizen parent.  We can help you acquire a certificate of citizenship.

Why should I contact a citizenship attorney?

When you apply for citizenship, the USCIS conducts a background check to see if you have a criminal record, prior immigration violations, or connections with individuals being investigated by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).  If anything negative turns up on the background check, your case could be flagged for further scrutiny, which could lead to penalties, denial, or even deportation. A knowledgeable immigration lawyer can help you avoid such obstacles and may be able to work with you to remedy the situation and handle your ineligibility.
